Joel Sarakula is an Australian singer-songwriter who has devoted himself to soulful pop while observing the contemporary world through his vintage, 70s-tinged glasses.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, he has lived in London for the last ten years and now in the Canary Islands. "I've spent my life moving to smaller and smaller islands," Sarakula jokes. He has developed and lived his soulful, soft-rock and disco-influenced vision across his last two albums, Love Club and Companionship, but his decision to move to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in late 2020 has come full circle for him . Where his music previously had a sun-kissed, summery and occasionally tropical vibe, he now literally lives in the sunny tropics. Nevertheless, Joel Sarakula was and is a globetrotter, always looking for inspiration, was once the victim of a car hijacking in the Caribbean and not only played on big stages, but also in the most remote fishing villages in Norway or dubious basement bars throughout Europe and the USA.
Joel Sarakula is now a fixture in the festival and club landscape, has performed at a large number of jazz & soul festivals, as well as at SXSW, Primavera, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Blue Balls (Lucerne), Blackisback (Madrid ), V-ROX (Russia) or the Reeperbahn Festival. And no matter where he shows up, his live shows always make the audience dance and beam enthusiastically. He can fall back on musicians from different regions, depending on where he is playing. Completely in the tradition of the traveling US soul and blues artists of the 60s and 70s.
His previous albums "Companionship" (2020), "Love Club" (2018), "The Imposter" (2015) and "The Golden Age" (2013) have brought him an impressive series of Europe-wide radio appearances from the BBC to Deutschlandfunk Kultur and have been critically reviewed in Rolling Stone, Stern, The New York Times
, The Independent, El Pais and many more. And the next album is already in the works.
